JL or DC GID?

JL GID or DC GID?

Douglas County Commissioners were encouraged by their 2014 Road Task Force to create a County-wide General Improvement District (GID).  It would enable them to charge taxes additional to what they are now charging.  It would enable them to not have to tap into General Funds and other funds currently used for road maintenance.

It would also mean taxes paid by Johnson Lane residents could be sent to work out of Johnson Lane. Funds could be sent down to Lake Tahoe.  Funds may be sent to South County and Topaz.  Funds could be sent elsewhere--and not to Johnson Lane.

Some Johnson Lane residents are exploring a Johnson Lane controlled GID.  Funds raised would stay in Johnson Lane to maintain Johnson Lane.

The GID would be self-governed by an elected Board of our neighbors, rather than having one representative on a County Board. It would allow us to manage our own local roads and flood and storm drainage and other infrastructure services. Johnson Lane residents controlling and managing the delivery of key services for us could be more efficient and beneficial to local rate payers.

Currently, it appears we will eventually have a GID to construct and maintain our roads and perhaps perform other services. The question is, do we want one serving the entire county, or one that serves our local neighborhood? Keep in mind that our area generates a huge portion of county tax revenue and a county-wide GID will distribute needed funds throughout the county.

A group of interested neighbors is preparing a Petition or Notice of Intent to form a Johnson Lane GID to present to the Commissioners at the March 5 Board meeting. Property owners in the projected area can show their interest by taking part in the process of forming a GID. To have your questions answered and to present your input there is an open public forum scheduled:
